Question to Radhanath Swami: I have heard that spirituality involves becoming emotionless, to kill all the affection we feel for others. That thought scares me. Is all that true?

Radhanath Swami: Everyone wants affection. Everyone needs affection. It’s the fundamental craving of the heart—to give affection and to receive affection. That’s the nature of the soul. Prema is the eternal nature of the soul—to love, to serve. And in that comes the greatest enjoyment.

Question to Radhanath Swami: How is it that loving God enables us to spontaneously love every living being?

Radhanath Swami: The Gita tells that this is because every living being is a part of God, just as every ray emanating from the sun is part of the sun. When we discover the love of God that is within our own hearts, we see an inseparable part of God in the heart of every living being—male or female; black ,white, red, yellow or brown; Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Jew , Parsee, Jain, or Sikh; Pakistani, Indian, Israeli, or Palestinian.

Question to Radhanath Swami: Sometimes someone causes us so much pain that even if we forgive that person, the memory of that incident keeps coming back to our mind. We want to forgive that person completely, but somehow we find ourselves helpless. How do we deal with that situation?

Radhanath Swami: Real forgiveness must come from the heart. In the beginning we may forgive on a more superficial platform, for real forgiveness to come from the heart it may take time. If our experience had been traumatic, it may even take a long time. But we should have that aspiration to really forgive, we should have that prayer.

Question to Radhanath Swami: Is it necessary for one to be a devotee of Krishna to practice forgiveness?

Radhanath Swami: There are different levels of forgiveness. Certainly, any descent person can be forgiving. However, the true definition of forgiveness, the deepest sense of forgiveness, is to be an instrument of God’s forgiveness because only that type of forgiveness can actually heal our heart (of revengeful feelings.)
